Board of Directors

Feed the Hungry, Inc. is an all volunteer organization. The Board of Directors is responsible for providing guidelines in the implementation or programs and resource allocation to support the mission of the organization. The Chairman of the Board and the Executive Director are responsible for the operation and execution of programs. Funds raised by Feed the Hungry are spent on programs that directly benefit recipients in the Philippines. Less than one-percent of funds are spent for administrative cost. Members of the Board who participate in program activities in the Philippines pay for their own travel and lodging.

Lottie Buhain

Lottie Buhain, Chair of the Board

Lottie is a prominent community leader in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area with active affiliations to several organizations. She is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. She married a physician and became an active volunteer in several medical organizations such as the Auxiliary to the Association of Philippine Physicians in America (national organization of Philippine Physicians) and the Philippine Medical Association of Metro-Washington D. C. Auxiliary (PMA). She was Chairperson of the Scholarship program of the Philippine Medical Foundation, Treasurer of the Alliance for the Control of TB in Children, and an active volunteer in the UP Medical Alumni Association –Baltimore Washington, D.C. Chapter. As a community leader, she was the overall Chairperson of the Philippine Festival Committee under the Philippine American Foundation for Charities, which involves the undertaking and organizing several month long events commemorating the celebration of Philippine Independence. She is a member of the Progressive Alliance of Filipinos and Americans, Inc. and a Board member of the Assumption Alumnae Association Abroad. She has received several Presidential service awards and is one of the twenty Outstanding Filipino Americans in the United States and Canada. She is married to Dr. Willie Buhain. They have two two children, Ronald and Edgar Buhain.

Teresita Alarcon

Teresita Calderon-Alarcon, Executive Director Emeritus

Teresita graudated from the University of the East with a Bachelor of Science in economics and finance. She retired from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after 23 years of service. She also worked with the United Nations in New York and Procter & Gamble. After the death of her husband Aurelio B. Calderon, she established a memorial scholarship fund in his honor at the La Salle University in Manila, Philippines which has benefitted hundreds of scholars. She also turned over thousands of his book collection which is now called the Calderon Filipiniana Library. Now married to Pablito Alarcon, they founded Feed the Hungry, Inc in 1983. As Executive Director, Tessie has been the guiding spirit of the organization. Her tireless efforts have brought Feed the Hungry international recognition including one of the Philippines highest civic awards - the Presidential Lingkapil (Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino) Award in 1998. In 2007, the organization was a finalist in the North America ABS-CBN Gawad Geny Lopez Jr Bayaning Pilipino sa America. Besides devoting countless hours to Feed the Hungry, Tessie finds time to volunteer in other organizations. She is a board member and treasurer of the Progressive Alliance of Filipino-Americans, Inc., member of the Asean Circle in Washington, D.C., and former adviser/officer of the College of Holy Spirit Alumnae Association. She has served as president of the Filipino Association of the World Bank and IMF. She is a former board member of the Alliance for the Control of Tuberculosis in Children an dthe Foundation for the Aid to the Philippines. Her civic contributions have been recognized through various awards including the Dakila Award of Washington D.C for outstanding community leader, award recipient of the Chicago Hall of Fame twenty outstanding Filipinos in the U.S., and first recipient of the World Bank and IMF Filipino Association outstanding member award.


Pepito Solis, Executive Director

Pepito graduated from FEATI University with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. He was a former project engineer with the General Services Administration and Voice of America. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration as program manger for critical power systems. An active member of the Philippine Association of Metropolitan Washington Engineers, he serves as the chairman of the Board and Sports Committee of the association. He builds homes, and has a passion for golf, fishing and gardening.

 

Nina Tamayo

Nina Tamayo, Treasurer

Nina graduated from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. A Certified Public Accountant, she currently works in the Capital Markets Corporate Banking Group at Branch Banking and Trust Company. She and husband Bobby Tamayo, are active supporters of many Filipino organizations in the Washington, DC area. As an active volunteer of the Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc. (“PAFC”) in years past, Nina helped make the annual Philippine Festival a success. She and her husband are the current chairs of the Dr. Jose Rizal Youth Award which is a joint project of PAFC and the Philippine Embassy. As a member of the Filipino American Institute of Accountants, Nina was hugely instrumental in the success of the 2008 National Council of Philippine American Canadian Accountants convention held in Washington, DC. As Treasurer of the Feed the Hungry, Inc., Nina succeeded in instituting sound fiscal principles in the organization’s accounting transactions.

Percy Solis, Deputy Treasurer

Percy is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines, with a degree in Business. After retiring from the World Bank as an accountant, she volunteered at the Reston Hospital while living in Reston. She was a volunteer at the Aurora Hills Public Library in Arlington, where she was able to secure
children's books and set up a library in the elementary pilot public
school in Lemery, Batangas. Books were also distributed at various public schools around the Philippines. She is wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoys reading and cooking.

Estela Sanidad, Deputy Secretary

Estela majored in Economics at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. She works as a Senior Coordinator for Memberships and Capital Subscriptions in the Corporate Secretariat of the World Bank Group.
